Altcoin

An altcoin describes any of the thousands of different cryptocurrencies that are not bitcoin. People develop altcoins to improve on the flaws of bitcoin, and to financially competing with it, creating a diverse cryptocurrency market. Dogecoin, Ethereum, and Ripple are all examples of altcoins.
