Amplification of a waveform

When referring to a waveform signal, such as audio, to amplify the signal is to increase its strength. For instance, when a sound wave is amplified, the volume of the sound is increased. The act of increasing signal strength is called amplification, and the measure of that strength is referred to as amplitude. A device that can amplify a signal is called an amplifier.

On a computer, the amplitude of a digital audio file can be modified with a DAW (digital audio workstation), such as Audacity.
