Blackberry OS

The BlackBerry OS was an operating system developed by BlackBerry Limited, formerly known as Research in Motion, for the BlackBerry smartphone. Designed exclusively for BlackBerry devices, it gained popularity with users needing a handheld operating system with multitasking, access to corporate e-mail, work calendar, and more.

History

The first iteration of the BlackBerry OS (operating system), version 1.0, was released for the Pager BlackBerry 850 on January 19, 1999. Five additional versions were released, with the last being version 7.1, released in January 2012. The final version added several new features to BlackBerry smartphones, including Wi-Fi hotspot functionality, Wi-Fi calling, and FM (frequency modulation) radio.

BlackBerry Limited discontinued the BlackBerry OS in January 2013 with the release of its new mobile operating system, BlackBerry 10. Support for BlackBerry OS ended in 2013.
