Blue light

Blue light from a computer screen.

Blue light describes any visible light with a blue hue. It has a smaller wavelength than warmer light, and therefore produces more energy. Humans are constantly exposed to blue light from the sun and artificial lights. Computer monitors, television screens, smartphones, and other LED (light-emitting diode) screens often emit a significant amount of blue light. Some studies have correlated prolonged blue light exposure with side effects, such as eye strain and trouble falling asleep. Although eye strain is caused more by blinking patterns, rather than blue light itself, a more direct impact is found with a user's ability to fall asleep.

To avoid these issues, computer users can enable night mode on their devices. Night mode color corrects your device's display to focus on warmer colors, or dark mode, which changes the user interface's bright areas to include more blacks and dark greys. Some users also limit their screen time through time management apps, or use blue light blocking glasses or screen filters to help them sleep better.
