Released in 2011, Duolingo is an online platform for learning and practicing new languages. Users can choose from over 30 languages and add them to their course library, which is accessible on a web browser or through the free smartphone app. Lessons on Duolingo are interactive, requiring you to type sentences and match words with their translated meanings. It also uses your device's microphone, allowing you to practice speaking words and phrases.

Duolingo encourages users to have a "streak" of consecutive days practicing a language, and rewards users with virtual currencies called "lingots" for maintaining their streak. Users can exchange their lingots to complete challenges and unlock perks in the app.

Duolingo is available for free on the website and mobile app. A premium subscription, Duolingo Plus, is also available for $12.99 per month, and includes the ability to download lessons for offline use, and the removal of advertisements.
