Eclipse is a project created by IBM in November 2001 that became a not-for-profit foundation in January 2004. Today, the Eclipse foundation provides four services to its community: 1) IT (information technology) infrastructure, 2) IP (intellectual property) management, 3) development process, and 4) ecosystem development. Its products include Eclipse ADT (Ada Development Toolkit), a free and open source multi-language software development environment with an IDE (integrated development environment) and plug-in system. Although most commonly used in developing Java applications, it can also be used with other programming languages such as Ada, C, C++, COBOL (Common Business Oriented Language), Perl, PHP (PHP: Hypertext Preprocessor), and others.
