Shorthand for et cetera (Latin for and the others), etc. is used when listing similar related items. For example, if you're listing numbers, etc. could be used as shown below.
Numbers include 1, 2, 3, 4, etc.
Looking at the example above, you would understand in addition to the numbers listed, the list continues as 5, 6, 7, and may go on forever.
