Short for finstagram, finsta is a slang term that refers to someone's alternate profile on a social network like Instagram, Twitter, or Facebook. Finsta accounts, also called private spam accounts, are more personal or candid than someone's main account that anyone can follow. Generally, a finsta account will be set to private mode, allowing the owner to limit followers to close friends. Finsta accounts can showcase hobbies, inside jokes, memes, rants, political beliefs, and other content that may clutter the feed of their primary account.

For example, your main account can post family pictures or vacation updates, while your finsta is used to post selfies or videos of concerts. Your main account usually uses your full name and a picture of you, allowing people to find and contact you easily. Your finsta may be set up using a less obvious nickname or avatar, so only friends will request to follow you.

Why is it called a finsta?

Finsta is a portmanteau of the words "fake" and Instagram. Because the purpose of a finsta account is to show your more genuine side, the name can be misleading. The reason this term got its name, however, is to differentiate it from your primary or "real" Instagram, which is sometimes called a rinsta.
