Created for the GNOME desktop environment, gedit is a text editor designed with ease of use in mind. The gedit editor is often used to edit source code and markup languages (e.g., HTML and XML), and uses a virtual file system for dragging and dropping files between gedit and GNOME files.

The first version of gedit was released on February 12, 1999, and in December 2008, it was made available for the Windows and macOS X operating systems for free as open-source software.
