Created for the GNOME desktop environment, gedit is a text editor designed with ease of use in mind. The gedit editor is used to alter source code and markup languages, like HTML (hypertext markup language) and XML (extensible markup language), and uses a virtual file system for dragging and dropping files between gedit and GNOME files.w

The first version of gedit was released on February 12, 1999. In December 2008, gedit was released for the Windows and macOS X operating systems as open-source software.
