Geolocation, sometimes called Geo, refers to using technology to identify the geographical position of an object. For instance, the operator of a website may want to geolocate the site's visitors to know the region from which most of its traffic is coming. Another example would be a member of Facebook using geolocation to let their friends know where they had lunch or took a picture, also known as geotagging.

Geolocation on the Internet can be performed based on information, such as IP addresses, MAC addresses, RFIDs, Wi-Fi positioning, or device fingerprints.
