MATE, pronounced "Mah-Tay," is a desktop environment for the X Window System released in 2011. It is based on the code for the GNOME 2 desktop environment, which is no longer actively maintained.

MATE is supported by the developers of Linux Mint and is used as the default desktop environment for several Linux distributions.

  • An image viewer named Eye of Mate, based on Eye of GNOME.
  • A document viewer named Atril, based on Evince.

  • A window manager named Marco, based on Metacity.
  • A menu editor named Mozo, based on Alacarte.
  • Support for the GTK+ 2 widget toolkit.
  • Undo/Redo and diff functionality for file operations.
