Pronounced as "one up," 1UP or 1-UP is a gaming term that describes getting an extra life. For example, in the Mario games, if Mario picks up the 1UP mushroom, the player gains an extra life. These extra lives help players complete games that only offer the player so many lives to complete a game. If the player runs out of lives, they lose the game.
