An outline is a summary, or overview that provides a synopsis of a larger set of information. Outlines can be a bullet point or numbered list, including the title of each section or chapter in the document; or a description of a few sentences in length. A good example of an overview is a table of contents.

How to get an outline view

  • You can use a word processing application, like Microsoft Word, to create an outline view.
  • In Microsoft PowerPoint, you can get an outline of a slideshow by clicking on the Outline tab next to the Slides tab in the left column.
  • To get an outline of a website, view the website site map.
