POS

POS may refer to any of the following:

1. Shorthand for parent over shoulder, POS is a term used by teens and children in chat rooms. POS indicates a parent is or may be watching them, and as such, other users might want to be careful about what they say or share.

2. Short for packet over SONET (synchronous optical networking); see the SONET definition for further information.

3. Short for point-of-sale, POS is computer technology to record all pertinent data about an item, normally by scanning the item's UPC (universal product code). When a scanner reads the code, it can display the item's price, record the item as sold, and help track the remaining inventory.

4. POS is also short for Proof-of-Stake; see our Proof-of-Stake for further information.

5. Short for piece of s#!^, POS is a derogatory term describing a poor product or bad service.
