Power strip

Also called a power bar, a power strip is an electronic device that connects to a standard power outlet that provides additional cord length from the wall and additional electrical outlets. When purchasing any power strip, we highly recommend purchasing a power strip with some protection from power surges. The picture of the Belkin power strip and surge protector is an example of a power strip. As seen, this power strip protects the devices connected to it and allows an additional twelve devices. This surge protector also has a coaxial cable and Ethernet cable connection to protect devices from surges traveling over these lines.

Note

Laser printers should not be connected to power strips because they can draw too much power when turned on. Instead, plug the laser printer into a wall outlet.

Tip

If you're using the Ethernet ports on a surge protector, ensure it supports your connection speed. If you have a fiber connection offering 1 Gbps download and the surge protector only offers 100 Mbps, you'll be unable to achieve your connection speed.

What is a smart power strip?

Some power strips may advertise themselves as a smart power strip. Being smart indicates that the power strip has additional circuitry that helps monitor and control the power to each plug. This extra circuitry helps these power strips be more power efficient.
