With computers, soft describes something that's capable of being changed or modified easily. The term software is a non-physical component of your computer that is easy to change. For instance, individual programs can be installed and uninstalled without much difficulty. In contrast, hardware is a physical component of the computer, which can only be changed by powering the computer off and physically removing it.
