Alternatively called a child domain, hostname, or leaf domain, a subdomain is a domain name with a prefix. For example, "" is the URL (uniform resource locator) for Computer Hope, and "www" is the subdomain. If we wanted an FQDN (fully qualified domain name) for a sub page or another external domain, such as our help section, we would create "" as a subdomain.

URL or Internet address

Subdomains are used for links to frequently accessed portions of the site, allowing users to remember only the domain and not the entire URL.
