Officially released on May 21, 2009, VMware vSphere is the name of VMware's cloud computing virtualization operating system; previously known as VMware Infrastructure 4. It is a service that allows users to virtualize and scale any application that requires an Internet server. Hardware resources are abstracted and can be shared dynamically across multiple virtual servers, backups are performed automatically, and load balancing is performed on all servers. VMware vSphere servers also offer one hundred percent fault tolerance.
