The process of creating or updating the content of web pages is referred to as web development. Whether it is to be viewed on the Internet or a local network, the content created using web development varies widely in its complexity. Tasks can range from quite basic, such as adding text and images, to the much more difficult job of creating an interactive online application (such as a game or product shopping system).

The process of web development utilizes one or more programming languages, including C#, CSS, HTML, Java, JavaScript, PHP, and Visual Basic. A person who has a career in web development is referred to as a web developer. A web developer is also expected to maintain existing web pages, and sometimes manage the security of a website.
