wireless local area network

Alternatively called a wireless local area network, WLAN is a type of local network that utilizes radio waves, rather than wires, to transmit data. Today's computers have WLAN built onboard, which means no additional Wi-Fi card needs to be installed.

A wireless network covering a wide area and using many different wireless technologies is called a WWAN (wireless wide area network).
