Yik Yak is a social media app for smartphones that permits anonymous messaging between users who are located close to each other. It uses GPS information to create groups of users who are within a maximum radius of five miles of one another and allows them to read and write to a location-specific message feed. It was first launched in 2013.
To help minimize cyberbullying, Yik Yak establishes "fenced-off" zones near schools where minors might try to use it and prohibits messaging in those areas. Despite this, some schools have banned smartphone use completely after students were found using the application to harass children.
