- Inventor and a computer engineer who lead the IBM team that developed the ISA bus and the first one-gigahertz computer processor chip.
- Dean has also helped in the early development of the computer keyboard. He holds three of IBM's original nine PC patents.
- First African-American to become an IBM Fellow.
- Inducted into the National Inventors Hall of Fame (1997).
