The Problem Steps Recorder or Steps Recorder is a feature introduced in Windows 7 and included with Windows 8, Windows 10, and Windows 11. It allows the user to walk someone else through a problem they can't describe with only words. With the Problem Steps Recorder, the user can record all of the keystrokes and windows the user sees that led up to the error or problem. The recording process facilitates troubleshooting the error, to view each event that preceded it.

How to use the Problem Steps Recorder

  1. Click Start or press the Windows key.
  2. Type Problems Steps Recorder or PSR.
  3. Click PSR or Steps Recorder in the search results.
  4. Minimize the PSR program window.
  5. Go to the first page of how you are getting to the problem.
  6. Go back to the PSR program and click Start Record.
  7. Start with the first page and click everything you clicked that lead to the error or problem.
  8. Go back to the PSR program and click Stop Record.
  9. In the Save As box, select the location where you want to save the recording file.
  10. Type a name for the recording file and click Save. This saves the file as a zip file in the chosen location.
