Free space
Free space may refer to any of the following:
1. Free space is the available storage capacity of a drive or disk. For example, the picture below shows that there is 25.9 GB of free space on the C: drive.
Knowing how much free space a storage medium has is useful when you want to install a new program. Using the C: drive pictured below as an example, if you wanted to install a new computer game, it would need to be less than 25.9 GB in size. If it was any larger, there would be insufficient free space.
2. When describing an action or verb, freeing space is removing software or files from a drive or disk to increase available storage. For example, if you had a copy of Microsoft Word, but decided to use the cloud-based Google Docs instead, you could uninstall Word to free up drive space.
