By "left key", do you mean the left button?  Does your touchpad have two buttons that serve the same purpose as the two buttons on a mouse?

this is a laptop without a mouse.  there is 3 buttons below the touchpad  I have to tap the left buttom to open a subject, where previously I could tap the touchpad.  thanks

I believe this functionality varies my brand of laptop. What is the make and model of your laptop?  With that info, perhaps we can be more helpful.

If this is an HP laptop, see http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/Document.jsp?lang=en&cc=us&taskId=110&prodSeriesId=3688868&prodTypeId=321957&objectID=c01876141 and review the info there.
