I have a T3400 and just put in a WD 250 SATA drive, the frist part of the install works fine but, then when it reboots for you to like name the machine and start windows the first time; it freezes or rather gets a black screen and see the mouse icon.

When installing Windows you should not have any peripherals  plugged into the USB other than the mouse and keyboard. And maybe a DVD drive., if needed.
Otherwise, a device nay stall the first time start up.

now, having said that, your computer might haste some hardware issue that was not resolved earlier.  Most likely would be the Hard Drive or the RAM memory.

Buts why do you have to install Windows again? What is the recent history?

I do have some usb devices plugged in that I forgot about :/

I done a fresh install for the owner and it ended up with a boot issue.  He gave me the unit long as I could get his info off of it which, I was able to do for him and give him it back.  I only have older units and just had that one drive so I bought that drive which, had windows 98 on it.

That PC isn't exactly up to Win7 standards...

I had no real problem running 7 Ultimate on it before.  I could only put a copy of Dell Home on it for some reason

What version of Windows is the machine licenced for?  Where is the copy of Windows you are trying to install from?

He needs to answer what the Dell disc was for...it's likely why it does NOT work...

bob1286, here is an important detail you need to clarify.
The computer, a  T3400   , was working fine with an older version of Windows? Which Windows?  **

The Windows 7 OS you are wanting to install is a retail version you bought for hat computer?

If you answer 'NO' to either of the above, it becomes a guessing game as to what went wrong.

You say that the Windows 7 home version works? OK, just stick with that. For any older PC there is little resewn to use a more expensive version of Windows 7.

Why do you want to use that old PC?

** That Dell PC sells for : US $199.20 on eBay and has a warranty and a real legit version of Windows 7. At an earlier timed Windows 7 pro was near to tan that price level. A few retailers still ask $199 for Windows 7 pro in a retail package.
