i just added a 802.11 wireless network adapter to windows 8 ie10 acer aspire one it shows up in the device manager and in the network connections, however it appears to be stuck on disable and no matter what I do it does not accept an enable command although it shows enabled on the device manager.  any ideas?

Have you performed a driver update? I have seen where incorrect driver will say the system is happy with the driver, yet the driver is no functional.

Have you verified that the wifi switch is enabled vs disabled on the computer if it has one. Sometimes it is a function key combination such as Fn + one of the number keys with wifi symbol in blue etc.
