How would you estimate computer bandwidth?
« on: March 09, 2017, 03:45:43 PM »
No, not the network. The computer. If the network were not the-bottleneck that it is, what would be the fastest sustainable transfer of data between one fast PC and another?
Imagine you have two new PCs with fast Intel i7 cores and losts of fast memory. Now imagine a top grade fiber optical cable between the two at a short distance.  An imagine you want to transmit 8 GB of data that is already in RAM. And you have spare RAM. So, how fast can you transmit the 8 GB from one to the other?
Wound it be like 5 gigabit per second?  50? 500?

Curious minds need to know.   :)

If the network wasn't a bottleneck then it would max out at the speed of memory reads/writes.
I was trying to dereference Null Pointers before it was cool.

Thanks, BC.
I see yhou arfe using  32GB 1600Mhz DDR3 memory. What would that be   in bits per second. Assume the data path is 64 bits wide, or  8 bytes.
