Error message 00173 and 00163 - IBM 600E

I get errors 00172 and 00163 when I start my laptop from cold, if I reboot, I do not get these errors. After clicking on OK, it prompts for time and date.

I saw this problem elsewhere http://www.computerhope.com/forum/index.php/topic,50286.0.html, and I thought (as suggested) that it might be the CMOS, because it keeps asking for the time and date.

I am also having issues with the battery not recharging, would the CMOS be causing this problem, or is the battery just likely dead?

The CMOS will not prevent the battery from charging...however a weak/failing laptop battery will cause all kinds of issues.

I'd still replace the CMOS battery though.
