    Error code 999?
    « on: December 20, 2008, 07:24:12 PM »
Hello. New here... as Im sure you all could tell..

    Anyways.

I have a Windows Vista HP Laptop. It's a year old. I'm not too savvy on how to tell what kind of RAM and all that it has.

I'm just looking to try and fix it. I only use it for school stuff, emailing, and car forums. I lost the server while on several car forums and an online drag racing website game. I figured, if I restart it, it might work. Its done that before.

When I start it up, I come to a screen that says "Launch Startup Repair (recommended)" And "Start windows normally".

Either one I choose it leads to "Windows is loading files". It them comes up with a blue school screen that comes with the error code    "Loadkey failed with error 999 (STHIV#0)".

It then goes into "Start up repair". That leads to "System recovery options". I click "Us" keyboard layout, and that leads me to more "System recovery questions". And thats as far as I get. It then just keeps doing that over and over....

What can I do to fix it..? Any help would be great.

    Thanks, nick.

    Welcome to ComputerHope.
[note: I removed your email to prevent SPAM and because we want to keep everything on the forums]

    I found this: http://www.computing.net/answers/windows-vista/c-drive-not-found/1771.html
It appears to be a problem with the Hard Drive itself.

    What Model Laptop is this?

Any drops or slamming on tables at all?

Oh. Truly sorry about the email.

Wasn't sure on that. I took it out of the text..

      It's an Altec Lansing.

On the tag on back it says "Product: HP Pavilion dv6500"

Also says I have a warrenty of 1 year. If it's a bad hard drive, does that mean I could get a new computer or..?

      Thanks for the help, nick

Whoops, I forgot to remove the email out of your post. Silly me.
Thanks for doing it for me. ;)

If the laptop is under a year old, I would use the warranty now.
Anything you do to the laptop now to try and fix it may void the warranty.

Basically take the laptop and all the papers that came with it to the store.
Explain the problem (maybe show them as well) and ask them to fix it.
If you want to keep whatever is on the hard drive (all your data and/or personal files), tell them to help you back them up.

With the warranty, they should get it fixed for free.

I will try to find the papers it came with...

Not sure what happened to them as it was a Christmas present from my parents. Luckily, it was bought at best buy. Is it a easy fix for them? Or does it need a new hard drive?

        Thanks for all the help!
