Reference number: CH000374
Lost system resources.
Issue:Lost system resources.
Cause:This issue can be caused by any of the below possibilities.
- Several applications or TSRs open or started
- Small amount of memory
- Memory leak or software issues
Solution:Users running Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows 2000 or Windows ME can find information about determining the amount of system resources on document CH000149.
Several applications or TSRs open or started
If the computer loads programs or TSRs when the computer first boots this will decrease the amount of available resources as those programs or TSRs are resident in memory.
If you have programs that you do not need opened when the computer boots remove these programs to help free system resources.
Information about TSRs and how to prevent programs from loading automatically can be found on document CHTSR.
Small amount of memory
If your computer has a small amount of memory the computer is more likely to run out of system resources because of this. You may want to consider purchasing additional memory.
Additional information and buying tips on memory can be found on our memory buying tips page.
Memory leak or software issues
Many programs, including some versions of operating systems, have memory leaks or memory related issues. It is possible for programs to take memory from the computer and not give that memory back to the computer once the program is closed.
Verify that you have all patches for programs you run on the computer installed to help prevent these types of issues.
In addition, you may want to consider such programs as MemTurbo. This program is similar to defrag for your hard drive as it will clean up and re-organize your system memory without having to reboot the computer. This program can be found on our recommended download page under the memory section.
