DMCA

Short for Digital Millennium Copyright Act, the DMCA is an addition added to the U.S. copyright law in 1998 that makes it illegal to circumvent any copy protection. For example, the DMCA prohibits bypassing the copy protection on a DVD to make copies of that DVD, even if you own the DVD.
