DMCA

Short for Digital Millennium Copyright Act, the DMCA is an addition added to the U.S. copyright law in 1998, that makes it illegal to circumvent any type of copy protection. For example, the DMCA makes it illegal to bypass the copy protection on a DVD to make copies of that DVD.
