LCD

Dell Latitude D610 laptop1. Short for Liquid-Crystal Display, LCD is a flat display technology used in laptops, cell phones, calculators and flat screen displays. LCD displays are made of two sheets of a flexible polarizing material with a layer of liquid crystal solution between the two and available as an active matrix, dual-scan, or passive-matrix display. In the picture to the right, is an example of a Dell laptop computer with a LCD.

The LCD does not refresh like a traditional CRT monitor, Instead, the display is created by sending various voltages of electricity to cells of liquid crystal causing the liquid crystal to untwist at the rate of electricity applied, generating 64 different shades per cell.

2. When connected to an FTP session the lcd command is used to either display current local directory or change the local directory being used. See the how to use ftp help page for information about lcd and other FTP commands.
