The fourth generation of mobile telephony, commonly called 4G, offers IP-based data and voice transfer rates at up to 150 megabits per second, almost 21 times faster than 3G's peak speeds. Along with increased bandwidth, 4G brings improvements in video conferencing, mobile gaming, 3D television, and other areas.

In December 2010, 4G saw HSPA+ (Evolved High-Speed Packet Access) and LTE (Long-Term Evolution) added to its definition as per the ITU (International Telecommunication Union).
