Projection mapping is a technique for repurposing 2-D images to be projected by a projector onto real 3-D objects. By distorting the shape of the image to fit the dimensions of the object, users can create convincing illusions. Projection mapping software and plugins for 3-D modeling software, like Blender and 3ds Max also allow these images to wrap on scale models of real objects to see mockups of real projections.

Projection mapping is used for large exhibits on buildings and structures like the one pictured to create and quickly change mockups of proposed architecture projects. It also is used to embellish or create stages for performing arts, like theatrical productions and concerts.
