Short for The Onion Router, Tor is a system designed to allow for anonymity online. It was developed for the U.S. Navy with the purpose of protecting government communications.

The software being run (often a web browser) will redirect traffic via a router to a network of servers, which helps the user avoid being tracked or traced while online. The Tor network is free of charge and uses layered encryption to help avoid having the original data sent be deciphered during its transmission.
