    I have a 1998 NEC computer with only a dial-up modem. I now have highspeed cable internet. what do i do?

    Install an ethernet card.

      how is that done?  i have a little bit of knowledge but have never tried to add hardware

      You buy an ethernet card (or Network Interface Card - the names are interchangeable). Then unplug the computer, open it up, remove the modem and replace it with the new card. It's very easy. You'll see how to do it when you open the case. If the new card comes with a driver disc, install the driver after the card.
