Error when Re-Installing Sound Driver for Sony Viao with Windows XP

attempted the sony site driver, but still said it is not compatible with my computer model. so i am downloading the newest link you recommended

i was able to install the last driver link and restarted my computer.  not sure what to do now!  i still have no sound icon nor sound at all.  unfortunately i have to run to work now but would apprechiate any other advice you have!  Thank you!

Do you have any errors in Device Manager?
Any audio device listed?

i am not sure if i am looking the correct place but went to control panel and to sounds and audio devices, and under device status is states: 

This device cannot start. (Code 10)

Click Troubleshoot to start the troubleshooter for this device.
