    Buffering of youtube video's
    « on: February 25, 2010, 02:18:34 PM »
Windows XP SP3, IE8, AMD Athlon 1.2ghz, Broadband, 3gb ram.
Hardly ever do, but the times when l do listen to a youtube music video
it stops every 3 to 4 secs to catch up on it's buffering. Drives me nuts!
(l would have thought that Broadband and 3gb was more than sufficient)?
Any pointers (if any) as to what to check, or is this how it has to be?
    Thanks

It depends on the speed of your broadband connection?  What's the advertised speed, and what do you measure on different speed tests?

Hi rt and kpac, and thanks for that. Quite an interesting site!
Am in SW France so did two tests (17:50 and 18:45) between Birmingham UK and Moscow which gave me an average return of :-

      UK
      Download - 1.88mb/s  Upload - 0.13 mb/s  Ping - 104
      Moscow
      Download - 1.82mb/s  Upload - 0.13 mb/s  Ping - 245

Tried the video again and it seems to be working ok now (ie. the red download band is now ahead of the playing button that moves across.)
Perhaps l just hit on that particular one at the wrong time in the evening when traffic was bad!
Just had me a bit worried that's all, as l had just installed my 3gb ram.
So before topping myself thought l'd drop into ye olde forum for some sensible advice.

Anyway, l don't know whether these figures quoted are good, bad, or just the norm. Any suggestions?

      Thanks again
      WTC

      Well, this is mine.

So YT videos should be loading fine for you. They usually require a couple of minutes to load for me.

        Ooh err, thanks kpac
Suppose that that makes mine pretty *censored* good then!
It just seems so slow at times (yep i've done all the clearing and virus checks etc. etc.)
Thanks for that link anyway. I'll give it a check first whenever l seem to be having slow download problems.
        Thanks again as always.
        Kind Regards

I'm sure there is an ISP serving your area that would be glad to give you that performance if you are willing to pony up the bucks for a premium service!

Nope, there isn't actually. It just doesn't exist. The only thing in place at the moment is mobile "broadband" which is very  Although my community has started a campaign to bring proper broadband to the area (http://www.skeheenarinky.com/broadband). Unfortunately, proper broadband in something we'll be waiting a while for in this country.

Well, I believe not many areas in the U.S. have broadband of such speed as evilfantasy has.  In my area, the max. for DSL is 10 Mbps.  I'm not sure about the speed with cable broadband here.  I have DSL, but my current DSL service plan is rated at 1.5 Mbps.  I don't think I want to pay the extra bucks for 10 Mbps right now.

Right. Last time I checked Earthlink it was $69 a month.
