invalid page fault in module OLE32.DLL

Hello all I am new to this forum and a bit of a novice.
The problem I am asking help with is by a friend of mine using windows 98. He is unable to even get the GUI on screen all that appears is a message box as below.
I hope someone is able to help out with this.
The error is as below.
This program has performed an illegal operation and will be shutdown. On the details said: Explorer caused an invalid page fault in module OLE32.DLL at 0187:7ff21a32.
