HELP: Dell Studio 1557 Beeping problem
    « on: March 10, 2010, 12:01:48 PM »
    Hi,
I just got a new Dell Studio 1557 with i7 quad processor and ati radeon HD 4570 graphics

Periodically, sometimes more often, sometimes none, the computer beeps once and short. Its not from the speaker, its from inside the laptop. I have no idea why.

something sounds like its starting to turn or something (sounds like a gulp)  then beep and sometimes there is a brief freeze/slow-down.

its always the same sound so i doubt its physical, so i think its a error code of some type but i can be wrong.

Please help! its driving me crazy, its not that its annoying, just i fear it might crash some time.

        » Beep Codes

Starting with Studio™1555/15 the LED codes for troubleshooting have been replaced by system beep codes. For various system failures the system is designed to emit specific beep codes which is designated by a number. The beep code signifies the number of beeps that would be emitted. For example beep code 4 represents a series of 4 beeps where:

            * The delay between each beep will be 300 Ms.
            * The delay between each set of beeps is 3 seconds.
            * The duration of each single beep is 300 Ms.

After each beep and each set of beeps, the BIOS will detect if the user presses the power button. If a power button press is detected then the BIOS will exit looping and will execute normal shutdown process.

The table given below explains the various Beep Codes.
        Beep Codes
        Beep Code    Description    Failure Coverage
1    BIOS ROM checksum in progress or failure. BIOS Chip    Motherboard failure, covers BIOS corruption or ROM error
2    No RAM Detected    No Memory Detected
3    Chipset Error (North and South Bridge Chipset DMA/IMR/ Timer Error for Intel platform); Chipset Error    Motherboard Failure
        Time-Of-Day Clock test failure.
        Gate A20 failure
        Super I/O chip failure
        Keyboard controller test failure.
4    RAM Read/Write failure    Memory failure
5    RTC Power Fail.    COMS battery failure
6    Video BIOS Test Failure    Video card failure
7    CPU Cache test failure (For Intel CPU only)    CPU failure
        8    LCD    LCD failure
