Notebook not booting up after BIOS update
    « on: March 11, 2010, 02:49:14 AM »
    Hi,

I tried updating the BIOS of my Sony Vaio CS-17G notebook to the latest updates given at the Sony Support Website. It's an Insyde BIOS, i tried updating my BIOS to version R0290Q2.

Everything went fine, got message 'BIOS updated successfully', 'Press OK to shut down.'

Pressed ok & now nothing's okay. The system is not booting up!

    Tried the following troubleshooting, but no luck;
    1) Pressing F2 & F8 keys.
    2) Disconnected the AC Adapter, removed the battery & pressed the power button for 60secs.

    Pls assist.

If the notebook turns on, displays nothing, gives no beeps and is not responsive to the power switch when turning off, then your BIOS is probably ruined.

Your best course of action is to contact Sony and send the notebook back for repair. They will probably want to change the motherboard. If the notebook is still under warranty then they will probably not charge you anything (don't know about postage depends on Sony).

If your system is just not booting to an OS then I agree with this guy: http://forums.mydigitallife.info/threads/17126-Sony-VAIO-CS17G-BIOS-Recovery-Help!?p=248149#post248149 [Venu] (not yourself obviously).

I can't seem to find your notebook on Sony's website what country did you buy the notebook in?

Right I finally worked out that you have a Sony Vaio VGN CS-17G notebook (lol at myself searching every Sony support website on the planet looking for just CS-17G laptop).

What I suspect has happened is that you have downloaded the wrong BIOS. Now I can't find the original BIOS so I suggest using the new correct BIOS. This website clearly shows four different downloads for different models (and that's just if you're from the US). If your laptop is still functional enough to load a new BIOS then I recommend that you check the bottom of your laptop for the full model number and version, then download and install the correct BIOS from the correct region.

Why is the Asian Sony website the only one that makes sense? And the only region I didn't check?

Thanks Accessless, Allan, Computer_Commando for your replies.

I downloaded the BIOS updated as instructed by the Sony Support Staff from the page Computer_Commando has posted.

Yeah, but from where can I get the original BIOS file?

Exactly what happens when you try to boot?

The power light comes on with HDD light flickering constantly.

When starting up, do you ever see the VAIO logo?

One positive development guys; visited Sony Service Center yesterday, explained them that it happened cause of their support staff has asked me to update BIOS, provided them the case reference number. They are looking into the laptop, could be it gets done under warranty. Fingers Crossed.

        No.

        No.
If you don't see VAIO logo, it's dead.  They should fix it or replace it under warranty.  It's very strange that it said "BIOS Update Sucessful", and then it's dead.  If they deny your warranty claim, file a complaint with the US Federal Trade Commission (if you are a US citizen).

Who installed the new motherboard, Sony or you?
PXE error could be BIOS Boot Order (attempting to boot from network), or a loose connection.

They probably tested it booting from their network and failed to change it back when they were done.  Let them figure out what's wrong.
