Your profile says you have Windows XP.  Is this correct?

Also, could you please try to clarify the problem a bit more?  I'm having trouble trying to figure out what you mean by "unhighlighting".  Highlighting is the act of using your mouse to select text, click, and drag across.  This highlights the text in color (usually blue) so you can copy it.
    http://www.computerhope.com/jargon/h/highligh.htm

My confusion comes from you talking about typing and scrolling.  Are you saying that when you type or scroll, your highlighted text loses its highlighting?  It is normal for this to happen when you start typing.  And it can sometimes happen when scrolling if you accidentally click outside of the scroll bar.

I have a feeling that this may not be what you are talking about, however.  Perhaps you mean that the computer loses focus of the current window/application.  For example, in the classic Windows theme, a focused window will have a blue title bar (the bar at the very top with the Minimize, Restore/Maximize, Close buttons).  If focus is lost by opening a different program or clicking on the taskbar, the title bar will then turn gray.  Trying to use your keyboard won't have a reaction on the window when this happens.  Is this perhaps what you are referring to?

This can sometimes be caused by Windows speech and text services:
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/313176

It can also be caused by other programs running in the background or performing automatic tasks such as auto-updating.  Loading web sites can also do this at times, and yes, some infections may cause this as well.  But we can't yet say if it might actually be an infection until we have more information.

Thanks for the additional info.  It does indeed sound like something is causing your windows to lose focus.  Viruses are indeed capable of causing this, but it is also quite common for it to simple be caused by one of your programs updating.  First, did you try any of the steps in the link I posted?:

      http://support.microsoft.com/kb/313176

Also, when your windows lose focus like this, do you notice any new windows popping up?  Does anything appear in the taskbar (the bar at the bottom of your screen)?

I'm not quite convinced yet that this is an infection, but go ahead and download HijackThis:
      http://www.trendsecure.com/portal/en-US/_download/HJTInstall.exe

      * Once it has saved, double-click on HJTInstall.
      * Click on the Install button.
      * It will automatically place HJT in C:\Program Files\TrendMicro\HijackThis.
      * Upon install, HijackThis should open for you.

When the program loads, click on Do a system scan and save a log file.  After a minute or so, a Notepad file will pop up.  Copy all of the contents of that file and pase it here.  This will help give us an idea of what programs are running on your computer and if any of them may be causing the issue.

It's important to have the entire log and not just the running processes.  All you have to do is highlight all of the text and copy/paste on here.  Or if it is too long, then you can simply attach the file.  To attach a file, click on Additional Options below the text box (when writing a reply) and then click on Browse to search for the file.

Thank you, that's much better.  Based on this scan, as well as information from your initial post, I don't think you have an infection.  So, that's the good news.  However, nothing is sticking out to me as being problematic.  I suspect that the problem might be related to Alcohol, but in all honesty, that is just a hunch.  It could also be related to one of your Messenger programs, but again, it's just a hunch.

For a quick-fix solution, you could just use TweakUI:
              http://www.chrisdottodd.com/2007/04/active-window-loses-focus.html

The first little section of that page will show you how to get the program and what you need to change.  Trying to find out which program is causing your problem would be a long task of disabling all startup programs, restarting, enabling one program, restarting, etc.  You would have to repeat this process until you found the culprit.  Using the info in that link isn't a complete solution, but it should work and it will save you a lot of time.

Also, I should point out that your Java and Windows XP are both outdated.  To update your Java, please read this page:
              http://www.computerhope.com/forum/index.php?topic=61227.0

For information about installing Service Pack 3 for XP, see here:
              http://www.computerhope.com/forum/index.php/topic,78919.0.html

Updating likely won't fix your problem, but it would be a good idea.
