Where is a 7-zip file saved to?
    « on: March 16, 2010, 02:49:01 PM »
I right-clicked a folder and used the 7-zip compression program but I cannot find the resultant compressed file.  I did a search and nothing turned up.  What would be the best way to find the compressed file?

Do it again and this time watch where it's saved (there should be a message within the program). Otherwise, check for sub-folders in the 7-zip program or just do a search of the hd.

The program says this:  which looks like a temp file.  It doesn't show up in a search.

      C:\ DOCUME -1\USERPC...D.tmp\the Kinks.7z

Go to C:\Documents and Settings and look for a sub folder starting with the name USERPC...  the name of the saved file is the kinks.7z.

In the future, change the destination folder to one of your choosing in 7-zip's options.

There's no files in the userpc folder with name I'm looking for.

Attached is a screen shot of the program as it compressed the file. There was no temp file folder inside userpc

              Try WinRAR?
It'll sure solve your save location problem.

I didn't say it was inside userpc. It is a sub folder of Documents & Settings

enter %TEMP% in the addressbar. The file is in a folder within the %TEMP% folder, and the folder has a "tmp" extension.

Or even better- use one of the other 7-zip options in the menu that allows you to choose the save location (Compress To...) I believe is one of them.

What do you mean "within the address bar"?

As in enter %TEMP% in the address bar, and NOTHING else.

When I choose the folder I want to compress and right-click and choose 7-zip, the two options for "compress to" are:

Compress to "The Kinks.7z" and email

or Compress to "The Kinks.zip" and email

I've now done both of those.  I just can't locate either .7z or the .zip folder.  They don't show up in %TEMP% either.

They don't show up in %TEMP% either.

Nobody said they would. I said that they are within a folder INSIDE of the %temp% folder. Either that, or in APPDATA%.

whatever the case- just do a search for the file using the search tool.
