Networking problems

I have two questions. 

First
I have a polycom, internet based, phone and I'm wondering if I connect my computer wirelessly to my router is there a way I could plug my phone into the eithernet port on the computer so it can connect to the internet instead of plugging it into the router?  I've tried using a regular eithernet cable and also tried a crossover cable and I couldn't get it to work with either.  Is there something else I need to try or a setting that needs to be changed?

Is there a way to assign an IP address to my computer manually so the IP address doesn't change when I connect it to a different router.

1) I'm not going to say what you are trying to do is impossible but I don't think it's possible with your setup. When you connect 2 devices together the way you are trying to do it is to network them in an "ad hoc" fashion so they can share files between each other. You would do this if you didn't have a hub or switch. However, if you made your pc a gateway by using internet connection sharing (ics) then it may be possible to do your setup but a bit more work.

2) I don't have win7 but not that many things have changed dramatically from vista. You should be able to go to NETWORK & SHARING CENTER > MANAGE NETWORK CONNECTIONS > RIGHT CLICK YOUR CONNECTION & SELECT PROPERTIES > SELECT IPV4 > PROPERTIES > SELECT USE THE FOLLOWING IP ADDRESS > GIVE IT AN IP.

1.  Software Bridge.  My guess is you'd want to create a software "bridge" between your "wireless" and "wired" network connections.  (Guess, because I'm not familiar with internet phones.)  Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) might work (but seems unnecessary and comes with its own limitations).  Perhaps you could use a "Powerline" adaptor to connect the phone to the router over the home's electrical wiring.

yes there is a way to assign an IP address in your computer but your default gateway must be IP address that the router gives you so you can connect in the router.
