Freeware request
« on: July 08, 2005, 05:09:04 PM »
So far I have been able to collect the following (links to) freeware that are of much use to all who need them:

AVG Free
-- Anti virus scanner
Adaware SE Personal
-- Anti spyware scanner
Microsoft Antispyware
-- Anti spyware scanner. Windows XP Home and Professional only.
Spybot Search & Destroy
-- Anti spyware scanner
ZoneAlarm Free
-- Free firewall - more user friendly
Sygate Personal
-- Free firewall - more configuration options

Easy Cleaners
-- Freeware registry scanner
Registrar Lite
-- Excellent replacement for Windows Regedit
Crap Cleaner
-- Freeware registry scanner/history cleaner

I have personally tested the software linked and described above on more than one machine.

Do you have freeware that is very good and you would like me to add to my list?

I know that Fed had a few suggestions, but I forgot them. Please list them again.

Much obliged.

Fed

All I can think of adding is
    KillBox, Stinger, cwshredder & Hijackthis.
    Two more for older hands.
    Procexp & Autoruns from http://www.sysinternals.com
Set Autoruns to Hide signed Microsoft entries.

If you don't know the answer, it isn't a dumb question.

A very impressive list Raptor.  ;)
How about KillBox under 'removal tools'?
How about 1 or 2 registry cleaners on the revised list?
Perhaps when the list is finalised, Computerhope Admin may place it 'somewhere' for you so we can all link to it.

Those are in different files as they are not related to security.

Are there no other freeware virus scanners? AVG Free surely is not the only one...?!

EmpTemp is good for emptying folders other programs won't reach and you can add folders to it manually. It also saves cookies.

ScanDefrag 5·0 is useful for '98 & ME as is Delindex.bat but it seems that CCLeaner has taken over this role.

          CALC '98  http://www.calculator.org

          CONVERTOR http://www.joshmadison.com/software

          IRFANVIEW http://www.irfanview.com

          Process Explorer from Sysinternals

          Everest Home Edition

          OPEN-OFFICE FREE http://www.openoffice.org

          MemTest 86 http://www.memtest86.com

          AutoStreamer

          NLite

Just a few I could think of.

Process Explorer looks far too complicated for the general user of this forum..

Everest Home Edition does make a very nice addition.

Thanks. Something which I use, as it is good value, is the BootIT NG Boot Manager and Partition Resizer.

If you are prepared to pay US$ 60 you get Image for Windows & Image for DOS in the package.

Never seen better value. A real money saver.

You just need to use the free PhyLock add-on to lock the boot drive for Image for Windows and you can aso download the free TBIView so that you can open images and extract individual files from them.

I get good images every time which are easy to restore with.

            Ewido is good.
I advise people to use an online scanner like
            http://www.pandasoftware.com/activescan/
because they are constantly updated and being online and easy to use I think people are more likely to do it.
