PC to LCD TV: How to connect the audio
    « on: March 26, 2010, 03:03:13 PM »
I was able to connect the video from my PC to my LCD TV using a VGA input, but I still cannot figure out how to get audio from my PC to my TV.  I bought a Mini RCA Y Cable and connected it to the headphone jack on my PC and ran it to the audio in on my TV, but I'm still not getting sound.  I have a hp Pavillion p6210y PC and an Insignia NS-L32Q-10A 32" LCD TV.  My computer does not have an S-Video input or an HDMI input, so the only way I can go is VGA unless I upgrade.  I'm trying to not to do this, but I am very confused about the audio.  Can anyone PLEASE help me?  Thank you...

Are you sure you've connected it to the Audio input for the correct channel on your TV, if there is one? For example, see if there are any labled audio inputs on the back.
Another solution COULD be, if you can't find anything else, to convert the VGA video to composite video, and connect it through that to your TV by means of an adaptor.

Try the audio output on the back of the computer, it usually has a higher level output than the headphone jack.

I tried switching it to the audio output on the back of the computer but still nothing.  Next the the VGA input on my TV, there is an audio in plug, but it on has a place to plug one cable in and it is green.  Since I have the Mini RCA Y Cable, I cannot plug that into it, but I do not know what kind of cable WOULD plug into it.  I have tried every single audio input/output port on the back of my TV and it still isn't working.  I wish I had a tech in my house to look at it, but I was told from Best Buy that the Mini RCA would work.  I just didn't ask what to do if it didn't.  Thank you for your help...

Could you specify more on this? Even better, could you take a picture?

If I understand what you are describing, you need a cable with mini plugs ( the kind that plugs into PCs) on both ends, not a Y cable and not RCA type plugs.  It should go from the back of your PC to the green jack on the TV.

Are you sure you don't have RCA inputs?

I hope this will work.  The audio in is light green and I have the VGA cable plugged in right beside it.  I can't plug the mini RCA cable into it because on one end it has a headphone jack-like connection and then on the other end, it has the red and white RCA connections, so there is no way to plug it into the audio port next to the VGA port.

Um. Hit additional options and there is an option for attachments. I'm not convinced that this connector is the audio in, as green is output, whereas blue is line in.
        Output is green (10)
Line in is light blue (9)
Microphone is pink or red (8)
You'd EXPECT it to be line in, not anything else. And a 3.5mm male-male cable will be required if this is correct. Alternatively, RCA to 3.5mm adaptors can be brought.

The first picture is the back of my TV and the second picture is the back of my computer.  I'm sorry I didn't realize that you wanted the back of my PC.  The audio port on my TV and the audio port on my PC are the same green color, so I am buying a  Male/Male Stereo Audio Cable to plug into both.  I hope it works!  Thank you so much for your help!

Okay. Try running a cable from it to the output on your TV.

Ok I will definitely try that.  I sent my husband out to buy the cable so I will know soon if it works or not.  Thank you so much!

That's the one:  3.5mm stereo plug, available everywhere.  Make sure he doesn't get the mono version.

Also, you could make use of that DVI-I Plug, and get something like http://www.tvcables.co.uk/cgi-bin/tvcables/component-dvi.html. Then you can use your RCA Cable to get the audio across, to take advantage of HD.
