Mouse jumps 90 degrees Northeast every few seconds
    « on: March 30, 2010, 02:10:28 PM »
Sorry, but that's the best way I can describe what happens. I'm running Windows 7 on my laptop and for the past two weeks or so, the mouse jumps up and to the right every 10-20 seconds. I'm using a Logitech wireless keyboard (MN: Y-RJ20) and mouse because I have my display on my television. I updated the drivers and updated Windows, but that didn't help. Any suggestions? It's always up and to the right about 90 degrees.

I hate that this seems to be the default answer for so many posts, but in today's world........... have you done a full scan with BOTH your anti virus utility AND MalwareBytes?

Downloading AVG Free as we speak. Also, my geometry isn't so great, maybe it's 45 degrees? See below. That's how it jumps.

Are you saying that you don't have an anti virus installed and resident at all times?

Yes it's my own fault, I reinstalled 7 recently and forgot to install the most important stuff.  :'( Another problem is, although more rare, the mouse won't click on anything. I can move it around, click stuff in the bottom taskbar, but if I try to click on a webpage or X anything out or anything that involves clicking above the taskbar, the mouse is unresponsive to clicking.

My mouse does all sorts of funky weird stuff when the battery starts to go. Have you tried fresh batteries in the mouse?

I was trying to dereference Null Pointers before it was cool.

I replaced the batteries, didn't help. As a minor experiment, I unplugged the USB receiver to see if it still happens. It does. So I don't think it is a hardware issue at this point. All virus and malware programs have come back negative, so I don't know what the problem could be.

Using an optical mouse on a surface that too reflective will cause the mouse to jump and you'd have problems clicking, in some cases.  But a malware hunt would be a good place to start in your case..    Just something to note, for the future..

Okay. Have you tried a "wired" mouse just to see if it works properly? Have you called Logitech Support (I've had very good luck with them over the years)?

Some years ago the Dell machines shipped with somewhat holographic mouse pads that caused jumping behavior, but usually it was erratic and not predictable.

I've also seen erratic behavior when using an optical mouse on a rough surface such as a Table-Mate II folding table.
