ATi 5770 on Windows 7 (x64)
« on: April 02, 2010, 07:26:23 AM »
As you may or may not know the ATi Radeon 5000 series has some 64-bit Win7 issues. People with Gigabyte motherboards have solved the problems with a BIOS update. I have an old ASUS M3A32-MVP Deluxe (deluxe meaning that is has built in wireless that doesn't work), and I was wondering if a BIOS update could solve my problems. Now I realise that there is a risk to this and no guarantee that it would help in any way (apart from giving me access to newer processors & maybe fixing the wireless).

Get a quote for how much it would be for a shop to replace your BIOS chip...then you can make a more educated calculation to see if it's worth it.

PS...it may be the wireless onboard chip itself...which a BIOS flash would not solve anyhoo...

That's why I've never bothered updating the BIOS before. Why a shop anyway?

Because it's not a chore most people can do...even with moderate soldering skills without frying a Motherboard...

Erm.. why would I remove the BIOS chip unless I expected to destroy it with the update? Also aren't they seated in a socket to prevent damage when they are installed? (I don't actually know if they still do, its been a while since I last looked)

The BIOS flashing utility Asus provides only works in DOS. However is appears to work in command prompt. Is it wise to initiate a BIOS flash whilst running windows?

No.
If you're running windows x64 and it works there then the utility is not a DOS program.

No, I have to use XP (x86) and the command prompt. Just says that it's not 64-bit compatible on Win7.

oh ok.

well either way, if it's a DOS utility, it has to be run right from DOS itself; in XP it's running in a VM, and who knows what effect that might have.

Right, how do I get a modern machine into DOS? Would my Windows 7 CD have a mode for it?

Just download a DOS boot disk from Bootdisk.com.

if you don't have a Floppy drive, I think it's possible to burn the floppy images to a CD instead, too.

I have bought a floppy disk drive, the amount of times that I've needed one, more than justifies it. Why are they so expensive? The shop wanted to charge me £15 for one! £18 if you include postage. I had to go to eBAY... £6! Free postage :P

No idea. That's one of the reasons I keep all the floppy drives from all my systems :P

I have a god 4 or 5 lying around, and even a 5-1/4" sitting around here somewhere.

Yeah, I used to and i'm sure I could salvage one from somewhere (*censored* there's a old PC with one in front of me) but I have no black ones. :( And my computer is black...

Why is the dominion of the evil ones name *censored*? I say that the word heaven should also be *censored*!
