Computer boots up only in Safe Mode
    « on: April 10, 2010, 10:12:07 AM »
Hi I am not very good with computers at all.  I had a virus alert pop up on my computer and it said I needed to download a file.  Come to find out it was not a real virus at all. They were trying to get me to purchase their virus software.  Now, my computer only boots in safe mode. Can someone help me?

When you computer is loading press and click F8 continuously until a screen appears full of white text and a black background appears aka boot menu. Select "Repair Windows" (I think thats what it is called) if there is not that option go into Safe Mode.

      How to fix:
      --------------
If you choose Repair Windows then a screen will appear for all sorts of options, choose System Restore. Now follow the wizard and you will now have a choice where you want to restore it to. Select the day before it stopped working. (It is usually caused by Windows Update, so if Windows Update is available I'd personally choose it, when you restart your computer, boot it like normal and hopefully it worked.

If you choose Safe Mode you will need to wait till your computer boots and access your account. Then go to Start Menu > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > System Restore. Now follow the wizard and you will now have a choice where you want to restore it to. Select the day before it stopped working. (It is usually caused by Windows Update, so if Windows Update is available I'd personally choose it, when you restart your computer, boot it like normal and hopefully it worked.

      Good luck. (Y)

I agree with Lapingga. It's just really easy. Just press simultaneously the F8 key on your computer when you start the computer. Then it will open another window where you can select Normal Start Up and it should start normally after wards.

Allan you should allow carriec have a range of theories to solve his problem, instead of eliminating other people's suggestions.

You should follow Allan's advice, follow the link, run the scans and post the logs. That way, we'll know what's happening with your computer.

There are no other correct theories. There is one right answer here - eliminate the malware. Period.
